Here at the BARN, every animal is special but Mr Frankie is a very special pup indeed!

He joined our family at the end of March with his buddy, Colin the Cocker.

His first 10 weeks of life were very ordinary but then he developed a condition called IMPA which was most likely related to a vaccine reaction. This caused him to be paralysed for a number of days.

Immune mediated poly-arthritis is a condition in which his immune system is attacking his joints. Thankfully his is the non- erosive form so the joints do not appear to have any lasting effects. However, he requires daily steroid medication. At this stage we do not know how long for but it is required until the vet feels its reasonable to consider reducing the dose to eventually stop it.

As the most likely reason to develop the condition was vaccine related and combined with the steroid medication, Frankie has not been fully vaccinated, nor will he be in the foreseeable future.

Frankie will need a special home with understanding owners who accept he cannot mix with unvaccinated dogs. A home with access to a large, secure area of land to allow Frankie to be exercised safely is needed.

Frankie cannot be walked in the normal areas: ie dog parks or the beach as he has not been vaccinated. This needs to be taken into consideration when applying to rehome Frankie. He may be able to be vaccinated at a later stage but until then this is an essential requirement and MUST be taken seriously.

The BARN will cover costs of all check ups, medication and tests related to this condition.

We would like to express our thanks to the fantastic team at Rathgeal Vets, especially vet Kirsty who went above and beyond for Frankie.
Also our fantastic volunteers, Phyl and Ian who brought Frankie into their home and have taken great care of him until he was fit enough to be rehomed.
